Waalweg Tschars/Ciardes (irrigation channel path)

To Reinhold Messner's residence at Juval Castle

At a glance: the prettiest Waalweg (irrigation channel path) on the Vinschgauer Sonnnenberg (sunny mountain) leads through different vegetation zones up to the Juval Castle, soaring high above the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley. The path follows the soothing, splashing waters of the “Waal” from the apple orchards past ancient chest-nut groves, crossing the sunny mountain with its Mediterranean vegetation. Farm inns provide hospitality line the way to the castle, with its many surprises (museum).

Best time: can be walked throughout the year, best months July and September, in midsommer a bit to hot. The castle is closed in July and August. .

Joys: the extensive views to fertile valley, the delightful “Waal” itself, the collections at Juval Castle

Efforts: an easy walk, also suitable as a half-day excursion, minimal difference in altitude

Starting point: Tschars/Ciardes (627 m), parking place in the village

9 Juval

Route: from the village of 1 Tschars/Ciardes follow the signs for “Juval”. When you come to the big chestnut trees turn right into the Waalweg (irrigation channel path) and walk along the “Waal” to the 2 Sonnenhof farm and then left up to 3 Juval Castle

Descent: follow the road downwards for a short distance, then turn right onto the “Waal” path for a short distance, passing the “Waalerhütte” (the hut of the person responsible for the irrigation) back to the starting point
