In 1910 the smuggler’s path was carved into the rock to bring the smuggling goods (e.g. cigarettes, sugar, etc.) into the Vinschgau Valley. Construction costs 32,500 francs. Today the path is one of the most visited high alpine sights. In fact, almost 1000 m of path length, up to 100 m above the bottom of the gorge, had to be cut out of the nearly vertical rock wall in a width of 130 cm, mostly as a rock-covered gallery with two tunnels.

The Lago di Livigno, also called Lago del Gallo, is a reservoir lake, the largest part of which lies in the Italian area. Only at the 130-meter-high Staumauer, which is located in the north of the lake, the lake lies for about two kilometers on Swiss territory. The lake borders the municipality of Zernez at the beginning of the Spölschlucht.
